Trion To Publish Petroglyph MMORTS

Online game publisher Trion World Network is collaborating with Universe at War developer Petroglyph on an upcoming unnamed MMORTS, the companies announced today.

The deal marks the first time that Trion will be working with a third-party on its Trion Platform. Trion, which did not reveal a release date for the game, will publish the MMORTS on a global basis.

Trion CEO Lars Buttler claimed that Petroglyph's upcoming game will be the "world's first truly high-end MMORTS." Trion has yet to launch a game, but the privately-held firm has raised $100 million in funding and recently struck a deal with the Sci-Fi Channel. The firm has also been hiring top-level execs in recent months.

Trion's specialty is creating server-based, live programming-driven games.

The Trion deal is Petroglyph's latest move into new areas in online gaming. In December, Las Vegas-based studio revealed Mytheon, an online action strategy game due in the fall that will implement a free-to-play, microtransactions-based business model.

Trion's Petroglyph partnership emerges just days after Trion president and co-founder Jon Van Caneghem "transitioned out" of the company.

Rebel Monkey Celebrates 100,000 Users For CampFu

New York-based Rebel Monkey has announced that its browser-based casual MMO CampFu has reached over 100,000 registered users since its launch in February.

Announced demographics include that users come from 110 countries worldwide, and spend on average over 60 minutes playing games and socializing on the site per session.

To commemorate the 100,000 user milestone, Rebel Monkey is to launch new parts of the CampFu CampGround and a full site re-design, with more co-op games, social networking features and ways to customize avatars and cabins to come "later this spring."

"CampFu is a fun and fresh online hang-out that is different from anything else out on the market,” said Margaret Wallace, CEO of Rebel Monkey. "Players have really responded to the look of our avatars and that you can actually use your avatars inside of the games in real-time – unlike a lot of online multiplayer sites out there where avatars are usually relegated to the sidelines.”

Habbo Creator Sulake Planning PC Version of Bobba Mobile World

Sulake, developer of the successful younger teen-oriented virtual world Habbo Hotel, recently launched Bobba, a virtual world for smartphones.

But Sulake is not stopping there – speaking to Gamasutra, Sampo Karjalainen, Sulake co-founder and CCO mentioned that “We’re working on an iPhone version that should come out hopefully this summer,” which was recently hinted at - but the company will also bring the virtual world to PC.

Bobba targets an older demographic than Habbo’s 13-16 year old main demographic. The virtual world, which is similar in concept to Habbo, currently runs on certain Nokia smartphones, and aims for a demographic of age 16 and older, providing a place where users can meet, date, party, work together, and otherwise network socially.

Users can create their own spaces, providing “a few more possibilities than Habbo,” for building and customization.
